چکیده

Oblique nonlinear interaction of two incident solitary waves, or soliton resonance, is important because it can produce a third solitary wave that has an amplitude up to 4 times the incident wave amplitude. Although this process is well studied for surface waves and in other fields of physics such as plasma, it has not been well studied for internal solitary-like waves (ISWs) in the ocean. In this study, we investigate oblique nonlinear interaction of ISWs in the Andaman Sea using three-dimensional MITgcm simulations. Our simulations demonstrate the occurrence of the oblique nonlinear interaction at several locations in the Andaman Sea. In the most prominent case, cylindrically spreading incident ISWs with less than 20 m amplitude produce an ISW of more than 70 m amplitude within ≈6 h. The modeled interaction is consistent with the Miles theory modified for incident waves with unequal amplitudes.

Generation of secondary internal waves by the interaction of an internal solitary wave with an underwater bank

[1] The generation of secondary internal waves by the interaction of a large-amplitude internal solitary wave with the Dreadnought Bank in the Andaman Sea (6 400N, 95 470E) is shown by analyzing a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image acquired by the European Remote Sensing satellite ERS-2 and by carrying out model calculations. Although the Dreadnought Bank is quite deep (241 m), the model calc...

Hydrodynamics and Radar Signatures of Internal Solitons in the Andaman Sea

The Andaman Sea is located along the eastern side of the Indian Ocean between the Malay Peninsula and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is a maritime regime containing internal solitary waves of extraordinary amplitude, wavelength, and speed that exhibit signatures via surface roughness variations that are visible to the eye, to cameras, to scanning imagers, and to imaging radars. Internal so...

The Disintegration (or Not) of the Nonlinear Internal Tide

The objectives are to use a combination of theoretical and numerical models to study the evolution of the internal tide and its possible disintegration into internal solitary waves. A central aspect of this work is to explore the role of rotation in the process. Rotation permits the presence of periodic, nonlinear inertia-gravity waves (i.e., the tide) that can act as attractors and arrest the ...
